Rodkey Pottery

Craftsman Style Decorative and Functional Ceramic Art

I have been passionate about clay since my first pottery class 45 years ago, and have explored ceramic art as a hobby most of my life.  In 2018 I returned to Spokane from the Peace Corps, retired and ready to pour myself into my creative passion.  I joined the creative community at Urban Art Coop and have grown and been inspired by the great artists in that community.  I am currently working in my home studio, while maintaining my involvement with the Urban Art community.

My work is largely inspired by nature.  It includes functional pottery made from porcelain with layered glazes reminding me of running water.  I make decorative and useful pots in the Arts and Crafts Style, reminiscent of the early 20th century American ware, attaching sculpted leaves, pinecones, animals and flowers.  I make embossed pieces decorated with plants and wind-inspired designs and glazed with celedons and other transparent glazes.  And I make Raku candle holders and vases, decorated by the fire that often produces surprising beauty.  Most of my work is initially formed on the wheel and then altered with additions, carvings, resist embossing and reconstruction.
