Gloria Fox

Born in Texas, I moved to Spokane at the end of first grade and have happily called this home ever since. Imagery and color have been life-long interests, earning art awards and scholarships in my youth. As a young adult I attended Eastern Washington University for two years, subsequently graduating from the University of Washington with a BA Degree in General Art, a BFA in Sculpture and a Secondary Teaching Certificate.

Following my formal education, I volunteered as the art teacher in my children’s Montessori classrooms for several years and offered a ten-year series of children’s summer art camps at my home. I continue my thirty plus years of working with the Museum of Arts and Culture providing adult, family and children’s programs and camps. I lend my efforts to several community organizations including gardening clubs. I am a member of the River Ridge Association of Fine Arts, Northwest Watercolor Society and a signature member of Spokane Watercolor Society. These enriching connections keep me growing and learning as an artist. I have exhibited in a number of shows and arts events in the Spokane area, winning several awards as a watercolorist. My goal is to keep improving and expanding my skills and continue my watercolor journey in a thoughtful and engaged way.

As an artist I am inspired by many things – patterns, light and shadow, color, the mood of a particular place or subject – in short by many of the common and not so common things that surround us. I am often influenced by the drama of nature and find the changing seasons an ongoing source of stimulus. Artistic expression is my way of responding to the world around me. It’s an attempt to capture the essence of what is attracting my attention and communicate the visual and emotional aspects to others. Watercolor is a challenging, sometimes frustrating, but rewarding method of expression for me.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I spend many hours outdoors each year on hiking and bike trails. Through my watercolor paintings, I try to describe not only the scenery, but my enjoyment of those experiences through my landscape paintings.
