When I started ceramics 18 years ago, I made an instant connection working with clay and started expressing my love and admiration for all types of beautiful little creatures through ceramics. Most of my techniques have been self-taught at my kitchen table. In the process of portraying animals, birds, fish, or amphibians realistically, I challenged myself to transform hard and heavy clay to look light, warm, rough, smooth, or fragile. I hope each piece will come to life with a soul—whether it be true-to-life or whimsical. For me, creating an animal piece is a very solemn, quiet moment, like a prayer. I hope these delicate creatures can gently speak to your soul and make you smile.
Since retiring last year, I have been able to expand my horizons by taking wheel classes and meeting many intriguing and talented ceramic artists. Exchanging ideas inspires me to try new methods and adapt my creative process. As a result, you will see a variety of art works not limited to animals at this exhibit. For example, I am showing pine needle baskets with ceramic medallions.
