My first encounter with clay was in high school art class in
Columbus, Ohio. I was signed up for a drawing class but happened to
wander into the clay studio one day. The minute I touched the clay, I
knew that was what I wanted to do.
Throughout my college years, however, I pursued another strong
interest; music. After graduating, I came to Spokane with my husband
with the intention of pursuing a musical career. But in the years since
high school, I never forgot how wonderful it felt to work with the clay
and secretly wished to again.
In 1983, I decided to pursue my long-held interest in clay and
started by taking a course at the Spokane Art School. Then I attended a
workshop given by the late David Shaner, whose pottery I love.
However, I am mostly self-taught . I've learned by reading, examining
other pots, and talking with other artists. I am also inspired by my
father who has been involved with ceramics since 1975 and is a member of
the Colorado Potter?s Guild. We are constantly sharing ideas.
