My love for art grew when I got my hands into clay. It ís so
rewarding and so humbling. I can create a beautiful piece, then lose it
through the quality of the glaze or in the firing.
A potter for 30 years, my skill with form and materials came from
studying for three summers with Marguerite Wildenhain at Pond Farm
Pottery near Guerneville, California. There, I was trained by
Marguerite, a former Bauhaus apprentice, in a Western European,
traditional/classical approach to studio pottery.
I throw and handbuild stoneware and porcelain. Each piece is
hand-decorated to suit the form with themes from nature or abstraction.
In the decoration process I use slips, wax-resist, sgraffito, and
texturing. Continually hand-crafting and testing my own glazes, I uses
both reduction-firing and saggar-firing to achieve the final effect. In
addition to refinement of form, I focus on the beauty of the surface
being enhanced by the interaction of clay, glaze and kiln atmosphere.
Viewers of my work frequently comment on the wide variety of forms
and the broad spectrum of color, glaze and texture. They enjoy the
nuance and understated elegance as well as the whimsy, boldness and
risk-taking. Blue heron decanters, quail cruets and elegant bowls are
among my signature pieces.
My wife, Kathee, assists me on a part-time basis. Recently she has
created her own pieces such as free-form mirrors, decorative tiles and
wall-hangings.
If you stay true to your inner vision and develop your uniqueness,
those are the very things people will take delight in and be drawn to in
your work.
